Early Childhood Education Lunch and Learn Series

Parenting strategies for supporting children's social-emotional and academic well-being

From: Early Childhood Education Initiatives

The Early Childhood Education Initiatives team is partnering with the Child Study Center at Virginia Tech to offer a lunch and learn workshop series with four sessions starting September 2024 and ending March 2025.

The series focuses on parenting strategies to support children's social-emotional and academic well-being. These strategies are helpful for all families and may be particularly helpful for children and adolescents diagnosed with a disability or mental health disorder such as ADHD, anxiety, or a learning disability.

The second session, titled “Strategies to Help with Transitions and Other Difficult Times for Young Children,” will be held Nov. 7, noon – 1 p.m. by Zoom and will be led by Rosanna Breaux, a licensed clinical psychologist, assistant professor in Virginia Tech’s Department of Psychology, and the director of the Child Study Center at Virginia Tech. Registration is required to attend.

This session will cover information about prevention strategies parents can use to reduce behavior problems such as tantrums, aggression, non-compliance during times of transition, and to support independence in carrying out routines. The strategies discussed will be primarily geared for children ages two to six years, but can be modified to work with children ages seven to 12.

Mark your calendar for future sessions in this series, which will be held Jan. 23, 2025, and March 7, 2025. All sessions will be held by Zoom. Additional information about the sessions, including registrations links, will be shared in the Virginia Tech News daily email and on the Caregiving site programs page
