Celebrate National Disability Employment Awareness Month in October
From: Office for Equity and Accessibility
The Office for Equity and Accessibility (OEA) invites all members of the Virginia Tech community to attend a National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM) celebration in October. OEA’s ADA and Accessibility Services team hosts the university’s NDEAM event annually to recognize the numerous and significant contributions of America's workers with disabilities.
This year’s celebration on Wednesday, Oct. 9, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Moss Arts Center, 190 Alumni Mall, will feature bestselling author, mediator, DEIA expert and multi-time TEDx speaker, Henry Yampolsky, OEA assistant director for education, outreach & conflict resolution, who will speak in-person on creating a work culture of inclusion, equity, and accessibility all while increasing productivity; it will focus on how integration of mindfulness, restorative principles, and conflict resolution can help employees and teams thrive.
Following his discussion, keynote speaker Alycia Anderson, a TEDx motivational speaker; corporate diversity, equity, inclusion, accessibility & disability consultant; advocate; and the founder/CEO of The Alycia Anderson Company, will deliver remarks on wellbeing strategies for employees via Zoom.
The event is free, and a complimentary lunch will be provided for attendees. Seats are limited. Those who wish to attend in person must register online. Attendees also may join the event virtually on Zoom.
NDEAM is organized by the U.S. Department of Labor Office of Disability Employment Policy. The theme for 2024, "Access to Good Jobs for All,” celebrates the value and talent workers with disabilities add to America’s workplaces and economy.
ASL interpreters and closed captioning will be available at the event. If you are an individual with a disability and require an accommodation, contact Raksha Sharma at 540-231-2567 or raksha7@vt.edu by 5 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 25.
