Plan ahead for completing Form I-9 if you are working this school year

From: Human Resources

Planning to work this school year? It's crucial that you plan ahead before you start work and be prepared to present original documentation. Anyone who wants to work in the United States, including students, must complete federal Form I-9, Employment Eligibility Verification, to prove their identity and authorization to work. As part of completing the form, certain documents must be presented.

United States citizens must provide certain documents (or combination of documents), including but not limited to:

  • passport
  • driver's license
  • Social Security card
  • or a birth certificate

International students in the United States on visas must provide:

  • permanent resident card or alien registration receipt card
  • employment authorization document that contains a photograph
  • and any other document based on your visa type and student status.

Bring originals of the acceptable physical document(s) of your choice with you to campus and be ready to show them when completing the I-9 form! Original documents are required. Hard copies or electronic copies are not acceptable.

The I-9 form has two sections:

  • Section 1: The Employee section, which must be completed online by the employee on or before your first (1st) day of work.
  • Section 2: The Employer section, which must be completed in person by the employer representative, no later than your third (3rd) day of work.

If you do not complete the I-9 form by the set deadlines and show the required documents, your employment will be delayed or terminated. For questions, visit the student employment and service opportunities page, contact your job supervisor, or email i9@vt.edu
