This month we offer programs to help you improve your health and communication skills.

Mental Health First Aid: MHFA takes the fear and hesitation out of starting conversations about mental health and substance use by improving understanding and providing an action plan that teaches people to safely and responsibly identify and address issues as they arise.  

Oct. 3, 2-3 p.m.: Type 2 Diabetes Prevention Workshop (online): This interactive workshop, featuring a guest speaker, will provide information on Type 2 diabetes, risk assessment, prevention, nutrition counseling, the Diabetes Prevention Program, resources, and more. Registration is required

REVIVE! Opioid Overdose Emergency Response Training: Come learn more about opioids, addiction, and how to respond in an emergency. You will receive the opioid overdose reversal drug Narcan (Naloxone) and an emergency response kit to take with you free of charge. 

Oct. 9, 11 a.m.-12 p.m.: "Improv" Your Communication: Join Talent Development and Hokie Wellness for a fun workshop that explores the benefits of learning the foundational aspects of improvisation and how those skills can be used to enhance communication in both personal and professional environments. The workshop will be held at the North End Center, room 2470. Registration is required.  

Oct. 9, 12-1 p.m.: How to Find a Therapist 101 (online): Finding a mental health professional can be complicated. We will offer useful strategies for locating a provider, questions to ask in initial consultations, and things to look out for when selecting a therapist. Registration is required

Oct. 10, 12-12:45 p.m.: Gaming and Gambling 101 (hybrid): This workshop is an introduction to problem gambling prevention. We will discuss a brief history of gambling laws, how youth and adult gaming can lead to later gambling, signs and symptoms of problem gambling, and what you can do to support someone in need. The workshop will be held in the North End Center, room 2470 and via Zoom. Registration is required.

Oct. 15, 12:15-1 p.m.: Know Your Numbers (online): You can’t manage what you don’t measure. Knowing your risk starts with knowing your numbers. Knowing five numbers can give you a more accurate picture of your health. Learn more on how you can care for your heart and keep it healthy and beating. Registration is required.

Oct. 16, 12-1:30 p.m.: Let’s Cook the DASH Diet: Join Hokie Wellness and our nutrition and dietetics intern for a hands-on educational cooking class on the DASH diet – a flexible and balanced eating plan for heart health. The fee is $10 and must be paid in advance. The class will be held in Wallace Hall. Registration is required; space is limited. Additional information will be provided after registration. 

Oct. 18, 12-12:45 p.m.: “I Don’t Need a PCP, I Feel Fine” (hybrid): This program will cover the importance of establishing a relationship with a primary care provider and discuss the many types of health care visits/screenings that are available and necessary for you. This session is part of the Physician Series offered each month by the LewisGale Medical Center Family Medicine Residency Program. See additional details about the series on the registration page. The session will be held at the North End Center, room 2440 and via Zoom. Registration is required.

Oct. 18, 1-2 p.m.: Getting Your Dose of Vitamin G: How Gratitude Improves Well-being (online): In this program, participants will learn strategies to cultivate gratitude in ways that feel accessible and nourishing. Registration is required.

Healthy Boundaries for Professionals: In this 30-minute session, we will practice setting boundaries for the workplace and beyond. Prior to attending, please watch the 30-minute video in PageUp that explores types of boundaries and skills to communicate our needs with others

  • Oct. 24, 2:30-3 p.m. (hybrid): Registration is required. The class will be held at the North End Center, room 2410 or via Zoom.
  • Oct. 30, 10:30-11 a.m. (hybrid): Registration is required. The class will be held at the North End Center, room 2410 or via Zoom. 

Oct. 25, 12-1 p.m.: Take a Brain Break: Join Hokie Wellness for a midday brain break. Bring your lunch and make a DIY craft. Materials will be provided. The session will be held at the North End Center, room 2440. Registration is required.

Oct. 31, 11:30 a.m.-12:15 p.m.: Take Heart: Caring for Yours (online): The heart beats 2.5 billion times over the average lifetime, pushing blood to all parts of the body. Given its never-ending workload, it's a wonder the heart works so well, for so long. Learn more about how to keep it working well for years to come. Registration is required.
