Middle-aged/older adults needed for compensated research study

From: Human Nutrition, Foods, and Exercise

Researchers are seeking middle-aged/older adults to participate in a study (IRB Protocol # 21-587) to learn if consuming artificial sweeteners have any impact on glucose levels in adults at high risk for developing Type 2 diabetes. You may be eligible to participate if you are at least 40 years old. If you qualify, you will be compensated up to $1,000 upon successful completion of all study visits.

You will be provided all meals for 6 weeks to determine if two commonly consumed artificial sweeteners have an impact on glucose levels. You will be randomized into one of three groups: aspartame, sucralose, or control group.

This study involves approximately 21-33 visits to Virginia Tech's Blacksburg campus, over 7 weeks. Total time commitment will be about 18-27 hours. The study will include coming to the lab for breakfast each day for 6 weeks (Monday-Friday) and taking your remaining food home for the day. Food for the weekend will be provided on Fridays. If flexibility is needed, participants can come to the lab fewer times each week and take multiple days-worth of meals at a time.

Other assessments include a DEXA scan, two blood draws, four 24-hour urine collections, and wearing a glucose monitor and a physical activity monitor for one week at the beginning and end of the study.

You will be compensated a total of $1,000 upon successful completion of all study visits, all meals and snacks will be provided for 6 weeks, and you will receive health information regarding your body composition and glucose levels.
