Title VI protects university community from discrimination based on race, color, and national origin

From: Office for Equity and Accessibility

The Office for Equity and Accessibility (OEA) is responsible for coordinating the university’s compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 (Title VI), a federal civil rights law that prohibits discrimination on the basis of race, color, and national origin. Following federal guidance, OEA broadly interprets the protections that Title VI provides to the university community.

For example, OEA interprets the university’s nondiscrimination policy, Policy 1025, which prohibits discrimination based on race, color, ethnicity or national origin, religion, and other traits or characteristics, to extend to prohibit discrimination based on shared ancestry and caste.

OEA strongly encourages any community member who experiences discrimination or harassment based on their actual or perceived national origin, ethnicity or ancestry to report concerns to OEA. The team receives reports via any of the following methods:

Lastly, university policy requires administrators, supervisors, and those performing instructional or academic advising duties who learn about an incident of discrimination or harassment – whether directly or indirectly – to report the incident to OEA.

For more information about this requirement or to report an incident, please contact OEA.
