New process for handling quarantined email begins May 8

To improve protections against malicious email, Exchange Online is changing how users access quarantined messages.

From: Division of Information Technology

Virginia Tech uses Exchange Online for email and calendaring. When Exchange Online detects a message that is likely to be harmful, it isolates the message in "quarantine” to prevent the user from accessing it. Messages may be quarantined if they are suspected of being phishing emails, or of containing malware or harmful attachments.

Recently, Exchange Online changed the location of quarantined emails from the “Junk” folder in Outlook, to a Quarantine page. With this change, you will now receive an email from quarantine@messaging.microsoft.com notifying you when a message sent to you has been quarantined.

How does this benefit me?

Removing quarantined messages from user inboxes reduces the chances of inadvertently interacting with messages that have a high likelihood of containing malware or misusing personal information, thereby improving your email security.

How to access and address quarantined messages

When logged in to your Virginia Tech Microsoft 365 account You can view your quarantined emails at security.microsoft.com/quarantine. Under the 'email and collaboration' section, click 'review' to access the Quarantine page. From the Quarantine page, you can choose whether to release the message to your inbox, preview it without releasing it, delete the message, or block the sender, which also deletes the message.
