Microsoft Copilot with Enterprise Data Protection is now available to students, faculty, and staff
As with all Artificial Intelligence tools, be judicious when sharing information with the app.
From: Division of Information Technology
Microsoft Copilot with Enterprise Data Protection, a new generative artificial intelligence (AI) tool from Microsoft, is now available to students, staff, and faculty through their Virginia Tech Microsoft 365 accounts.
Copilot uses large language models (LLMs) to help with various tasks such as analyzing data, drafting visual media, creating to-do lists, or understanding topics. Enterprise Data Protection ensures that you have the same level of protection when using Copilot as you do when using other Microsoft applications, if you are logged into your Virginia Tech account.
Ensure you are logged into your Virginia Tech Microsoft 365 account when using Copilot for university purposes. The version of Copilot available through Virginia Tech (Microsoft Copilot with Enterprise Data Protection) has additional security features such as enhanced data encryption and the automated removal of information that could identify you or Virginia Tech from the chat session data. Note that the version of Copilot available on personal Microsoft accounts does not have these features.
Users are encouraged to review the university’s data policies and standards to determine whether it is appropriate to use their data with Copilot. These include:
- Policy 7105: Policy for Protecting University Information in Digital Form
- Virginia Tech IT Security Standard (minimum security standard)
- The Virginia Tech Risk Classification Standard
- Standard for Security Web Technology Resources
More guidance about using Copilot at Virginia Tech is available in our 4Help IT Support Knowledge Base.
