Hokie Wellness offers a range of programs during August. They include:

Aug. 2, 12-1 p.m.: Wednesday Walk and Talk with Bryan Garey: Join Bryan Garey, vice president for human resources, for a campus walk that begins at the front entrance of the North End Center and will begin walking at noon. No registration is needed.

Aug. 3, 11 a.m.-12 p.m.: South Main Kroger Grocery Store Tour: Grocery shopping can feel overwhelming and time-consuming. This program is an interactive opportunity for participants to gain hands-on experience to make healthy choices at the grocery store. Navigate the grocery store aisles and learn strategies to efficiently shop, identify healthy foods, understand food labels, save money on groceries, and plan ahead for grocery shopping. Space is limited, and registration is required.

TimelyCare Information Session: TimelyCare is a virtual health mental wellness service available to benefitted faculty and staff and non-student wage employees at no cost. Employees can access TimelyCare services regardless of their location in the United States. In this session, employees will learn more about the three free services offered by TimelyCare: free individual counseling sessions, TalkNow on-demand mental health support, and health coaching.


Aug. 8, 12:15-1:15 p.m.:
Take a Brain Break with Hokie Wellness: No matter your goals, a vision board – a visual representation of your goals – is a great tool to have during your journey. Join Hokie Wellness for our August Brain Break, where we’ll craft vision boards for the new semester! Space is limited and registration is required.

Aug. 9, 12:15 p.m.: Healthy Nutrition for Busy Schedules: Do you notice that your eating patterns are different when you plan ahead versus when you don’t? Meal planning can be challenging, especially when you’re short on time or aren’t quite sure where to start. In this virtual program, you’ll learn simple strategies for healthy meal and snack planning to help save time and mental energy throughout the week, and leave with a few recipe ideas to get started. Registration is required.

Mental Health First Aid: Mental Health First Aid takes the fear and hesitation out of starting conversations about mental health and substance-use problems by improving understanding and providing an action plan that teaches people to safely and responsibly identify and address a potential mental illness or substance-use disorder.

  • Aug. 11, 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. (in-person) Registration is required
  • Aug. 31, 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. (virtual) Registration is required.


Aug. 11, 11 a.m.-3 p.m.:
Massages at the North End Center: Reduce stress, relieve tension, and ease your aches and pains with a 20-minute workplace massage from licensed massage therapist Tod Whitehurst.  Massage can reduce pain in your neck, arms, shoulders, and back. It can also be helpful in treating conditions such as carpal tunnel syndrome, TMJ, headaches, and fibromyalgia. Massages are done while fully clothed. Each session is $25, or $26 if using a credit card. Sign up at https://bit.ly/32biseV or call Tod at 540-392-3723. Aug. 29, 12-1 p.m.: Sleep Better Techniques: Everyone at one point or another will experience sleep problems such as sleep deprivation, sleeplessness, and/or sleep disturbances. This virtual program provides information on what happens during sleep, along with tips on how to start reaping the benefits of great sleep. Registration is required.
