Hokie Wellness offers a range of programs during September. They include:

Sept. 1, 1-2 p.m.: Healthy Nutrition for Busy Schedules: Do you notice that your eating patterns are different when you plan ahead versus when you don’t plan ahead? Meal planning can feel overwhelming, especially when you’re short on time or aren’t quite sure where to start. In this virtual workshop you’ll learn simple strategies for healthy meal and snack planning to help save time and mental energy throughout the week, and you’ll leave with a few recipe ideas to get started. Registration is required.

Sept. 6, 7-8 a.m.: Introduction to Himalayan Kriya Yoga: Himalayan kriya yoga is a powerful practice from the heart of the Himalayas that combines kriya (movement of bodies’ energies), pranayama (intentional breath practice), meditation, and hatha asanas (traditional yogic postures) into a unique, powerful, and transformative yogic practice. This class, suitable for all experience levels, is led by Henry Yampolsky, a master-level Sattva yoga teacher. The program will be held at the Inn at Virginia Tech, Drillfield Room. Space is limited and registration is required

Sept. 7, 12-1 p.m.: Grow to Go: Take a Plant Home: Plants not only brighten up our surroundings, they can also enhance mood and help relieve stress. Taking care of plants is also a great reminder of the importance of our own self-care. Stop by the North End Center’s Turner Street entrance to pot a plant to take home.

Sept. 13, 12:30-1:30 p.m.: Work/Life Boundaries: This virtual workshop is intended to provide you with the foundational knowledge to support you in setting work-life boundaries and the space to reflect on your balance between work and life. Registration is required.

Sept. 15, 9:30-10:30 a.m.: Hokie Wellness Walking Club: Trek Across Virginia: For the 2022-23 academic school year we will be walking the 555 miles of the Appalachian Trail virtually in Virginia! Join us at this kickoff event for refreshments, answers to any questions you may have, and, weather permitting, a short walk around campus. The meeting will be held at the North End Center. If you’d like to be part of the fun but can’t join us for the kickoff, please email us at hokiewellness@vt.edu, and we’ll be sure to send you the information.

Sept. 20, 12-1 p.m.: Debt Management: Employees will have the opportunity to discuss information related to student loans and paying them off as well as strategies for managing any kind of current or future debt (credit, mortgage, etc.). Registration is required.

Sept. 21, 2-3 p.m.: EAP/LiveHealth Online: Learn more about the Employee Assistance Program (EAP), how to get connected, and what additional resources EAP has to offer. This virtual session will also include a brief demonstration of LiveHealth Online, a robust telehealth platform that provides Anthem COVA Care members access to a variety of medical professionals, including board-certified physicians, licensed therapists, psychologists, psychiatrists, allergy specialists, and more. Registration is required.

Sept. 22, 12-1 p.m.: Stress Reduction Tips: Handling stress takes effort, but the results can improve your day-to-day life. In this virtual program, you’ll learn tips on how to help relieve stress. Registration is required.

Sept. 27, 12:15-1 p.m.: Tour of Hahn Horticulture Garden: Join us for a tour of the Hahn Horticulture Garden. The garden features perennial borders, water gardens, shade gardens, a meadow garden, and the Peggy Lee Hahn Garden Pavilion. The group will meet at the front entrance to the pavilion. Space is limited, and registration is required.

Sept. 27, 1-4 p.m.: Recovery Ally Training: Hokie Wellness will offer an interactive training session on recovery from addiction, ways to eliminate stigma, and how to become a recovery ally. The Virginia Tech Recovery Community endeavors to create an environment where students in or seeking recovery feel accepted, are comfortable asking for and receiving help, and where their achievements are celebrated. As a recovery ally, you are declaring to students in or seeking recovery that you embody these ideals. The program will be held at the North End Center, room 2470. Registration is required.

Sept. 29, 8:30-9:30 a.m.: Koru Basic Mindfulness: In this four-week virtual program, attendees will learn more about mindfulness and how meditation can help improve our mindfulness. We have found that folks get a lot more out of Koru if they stick with the course from beginning to end; therefore, attendance at all four sessions is required. Sessions will be held Sept. 29 and Oct. 6, 13, and 20. Registration is required.

Sept. 29, 12:30-1:30 p.m.: Self-Care Strategies: A Collection of Practices to Support Well-being: Self-care is an ongoing and multidimensional practice. This virtual program will provide tips for effective and sustainable self-care. Registration is required.

**Mark your calendar! Oct. 1, New River Valley Heart Walk, 10 a.m.: Create a team and join fellow members of the Hokie Nation at this year’s American Heart Association Heart Walk! Chris Kiwus, interim senior vice president and chief business officer, and Bryan Garey, vice president for Human Resources, will serve as Virginia Tech co-chairs for this year’s walk. The 1.5 mile or 5K walk or run will be held at Bisset Park in Radford. Physical and emotional health have never been more important than they are now. Joining the New River Valley Heart Walk is a great way to boost them both – all while making a huge impact in our community and saving lives. We encourage employees to form teams, raise funds, and walk Oct. 1! Information, team registration, and more is available at the Virginia Tech Heart Walk Page.
