Tom Wamsley joined Virginia Tech as senior vice president for advancement in August. He is only the second person to serve in the role.
Why Virginia Tech?
The national reputation as a leader in public education. The mission of service. The last 10 years of growth and momentum. And the great work of the Advancement team led by Charlie Phlegar.
What have you discovered about Hokie Nation that stands out most to you?
The passion for the university and its mission. Hokie Nation lives up to its national reputation for being one of the most engaged in the nation.

What keeps you grounded during a busy week – a hobby, ritual, guilty pleasure?
Cycling and cheering on my kids on the field and stage.
How do you see advancement shaping the future of the university?
The future of Virginia Tech is driven by the power and influence of our alumni. Engaging our alumni and donors is always my top priority. If we can continue to create meaningful and effective engagement opportunities for our alumni, the possibilities are endless.
If you could share one message with our alumni community, what would it be?
It is an unprecedented time for higher ed – alumni support has never been more essential. As the industry goes through this course correction, it is our alumni’s expertise, support and advocacy that will help guide us to new heights on the other side of this transition.
What advice do you have for Hokies who want to make a difference?
Show your Hokie pride by staying up to date on what is happening at Virginia Tech, help recruit a student, host an intern, hire a new grad, attend an event, and contribute in a way that is meaningful to you.
What’s something alumni might be surprised to learn about you?
People are usually surprised to learn that I have a Harley Davidson Fat Boy and love riding it.
Do you have a favorite Hokie tradition yet (or one you’re looking forward to experiencing)?
