The students traveled to Fairfield, Virginia to produce 50 prototype backpacks in collaboration with UTS Systems, a manufacturer of military grade shelters. The bags are intended to address the needs of individuals who are housing insecure or struggling with substance misuse, and will be given to the Drop-In Center in Roanoke, Virginia to be field tested so students can learn if improvements need to be made.

Edward Becker, an associate professor in the College of Architecture, Arts and Design says the Southwest Virginia and West Virginia region is the mecca of hardwood resources in North America. Becker's research focuses on using low carbon, sustainable resources for building construction using mass timber products. Specifically, students work with cross-laminated wood. The crucial element? The joint effort with AAD and the College of Natural Resources and Environment. The Think Wood exhibit is presented by the Softwood Lumber Board, and is a culmination of the collaboration between the two colleges.

In an effort to foster collaborative efforts the Commonwealth Cyber Initiative (CCI) Southwest Virginia Node hosted a technology showcase in partnership with the Virginia Tech Transportation Institute (VTTI). Participants from around Virginia were able to present research, and network with other CCI nodes. VTTI presented two demos, one of which featured the remote control of an Autonomous Truck-Mounted Attenuator (ATMA) vehicle. The demos highlighted the use of wireless technologies like 5G, and Cellular Vehicle-to-Everything (C-V2X) platforms.

Igor Sharakov, a professor of the Department of Entomology in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, is researching a way to create a three dimensional map of the genomic structure of mosquitos that carry and transmit malaria. Sharakov is in collaboration with Varvara Lukyanchikova, a Fulbright Scholar with the Novosibirsk Scientific Center of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences. Using this roadway of five different species of mosquitos, the hope is to find a way to eliminate the spread of malaria as well as other infectious diseases.

According to Virginia Tech University Arborist Jamie King, the Merry Oak tree is centuries old and even predates the university itself. The tree was brought down due to a storm on May of 2020. Facilities workers came out on a cold wet morning to load the remains of the tree and transport it to Floyd, Virginia. The wood will be milled and given to an artist to repurpose for future Hokies to rediscover its past.

Pedestrian Safety Solutions, LLC is working with the Virginia Tech Transportation Institute on their LED lighting system Auto Motion Alert. The lighting system is outfitted on the front of a vehicle to help alert pedestrians and other road users to how fast and what direction the vehicle is traveling. Paul Schaye, founder of Pedestrian Safety Solutions and Alexandria Rossi-Alvarez, a PhD student at VTTI have both been impacted by roadway accidents and hope their research will help prevent further pedestrian fatalities. Schaye has also donated $40,000 to support VTTI's mission to save lives. October is National Pedestrian Safety Month, which raises awareness and reminds drivers to look out for pedestrians, cyclists, and other roadway users.

Licardi. Commonwealth's Activities Director, Corinne Shelor also helped create Theatre Through Windows as a source of engagement for seniors living in the center during the COVID-19 pandemic. Activies include sing-a-longs, poetry, charades and other interactive games while maintaining distance between the students and residents.

For this year's annual Run in Remembrance, Hokies around the world came together virtually. Through efforts to encourage social distancing, participants ran and walked far more than the 32,000-mile goal to honor the 32 lives lost on April 16, 2007. According to the Stridekick app, which was used to track the virtual run, participants logged more than 80,000 virtual miles.

Virginia Tech alumnae Brianna Valliere ’16, a fermentation specialist, instructed the class in the scientific aspects and how they affect the cider making process.

During the week of June 16th through June 21st, high school seniors from around the area participated in Black College Institute. BCI is a college preparatory experience that engages students with hands-on learning activities from all colleges on the campus of Virginia Tech. Natasha Saunders, Director of SOAR (Student Opportunity Achievement Resources), says the program helps students figure out what they want to do with their life while nurturing their passions. Saunders also says, BCI helps with retention when students realize where they want to pursue their academic career. Black College Institute has yielded 72% of black college applicants for the coming Fall 2019-2020 semester at Virginia Tech.

Limitations are self imposed according to Andrew Young, a junior at Virginia Tech. Young was born without a left arm from the elbow down. With little more than a rubber band and a plastic spoon, he taught himself how to play guitar. Now he's in a band, and performs solo. Recently he took to the stage at the Big Event, and hopes that his music can be an inspiration to others.
