Virginia Tech celebrates the late Nikki Giovanni through an immersive exhibit at the Center for the Arts. The exhibit uses video projection of graphics and photos with an original music score to highlight six of Giovanni's poems read by Giovanni herself. This exhibit will move to the Torpedo Factory Art Center in 2026. Poetry and Readings: Nikki Giovanni Poetic Arrangement: Brittney S. Harris and Charles Nichols Music: Charles Nichols Embodied Movement: Brittney S. Harris Motion Capture: Trevor Finney and Alice Macanga Motion Graphics and Graphic Design: Meaghan Dee, Trevor Finney, Demetrya Dye, and Lexy Altieri Project Advisor: Gena E. On Dec. 9, the first anniversary of her passing, Giovanni’s presence and poetry will be on display in a special multimedia exhibit in the Cube at the Center for the Arts at Virginia Tech. It will also be on display at the Torpedo Factory Art Center in Alexandria in early 2026.

The 2024 Giovanni-Steger Poetry Prize offered a dazzling array of poetic excellence, featuring original writings by students, faculty authors, and University Distinguished Professor Emerita Nikki Giovanni. Congratulations to all of the finalists and shoutout to the the three winning poets! Caroline Foltz, College of Liberal Arts and Human Sciences, English, 3rd place Emily Paquette, College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, animal and poultry sciences, 2nd place Ayah Ali, College of Engineering, general engineering, 1st place By placing in the Top 3, Ali won $1,500, Paquette won $800, and Foltz won $500 prizes.

Anuradha Bhowmik, whose poetry addresses her life experiences as a Bangladeshi-born American woman in today’s world, was selected as the winner of the 2021 Agnes Lynch Starrett Poetry Prize. Bhowmik won a $5,000 grand prize, and the University of Pittsburgh Press plans to publish her collection later this fall.
