Updates to Microsoft storage plans for graduate students, employees
Modified storage plans afford more flexibility for employee and graduate student storage.
From: Division of Information Technology
Virginia Tech implemented planned limits for Microsoft storage in July. In response to feedback, the university will modify some plan elements to add flexibility to storage limits and provide additional management options for users and departments.
A detailed outline of storage changes for each constituent group is available on the Microsoft storage changes website.
What’s changing
For employees: Baseline storage allocations adjusted
For most employees, the new baseline is 50 gigabytes (GB) of OneDrive storage, and 100 GB of email storage in Exchange Online, with an additional 1.5 terabytes of email archive storage.
Departments will manage employee OneDrive storage and have the ability to increase individual storage limits as needed. Please contact your department’s IT professional if you have any questions about your storage allocation. See the employee information page for details.
For graduate students: Option to request additional storage added
Starting Aug. 29, graduate students will receive 100 GB of fixed email storage in Exchange Online, as well as a baseline level of 10 GB of OneDrive storage. Departments will manage graduate student OneDrive storage and have the ability to increase individual storage well above baseline if needed.
Graduate students should contact IT professionals in the department associated with their academic program (or, if applicable, their assistantship) to request additional OneDrive storage if needed. See the student information page for details.
For all students: New option to create or retain up to five Teams
To ensure that students can access collaborative online spaces for group projects and activities while at Virginia Tech, starting Aug. 29, each student may own up to five Teams spaces, each with a storage limit of 1 GB.
Students who currently own a Team that has not been claimed by a department will may select up to five of these to keep. The selection period will open on Aug. 29 and close on Sept. 30. Students who own fewer than five will be able to create new ones under their account in MyCAT, the My Collaborative Accounts Tool, until they reach the five-site limit. More information will be available soon.
