From: Division of Information Technology
Annual IT security training is required for all university employees, in accordance with Virginia Tech’s Minimum Security Standards for Information Technology systems.
In continuation of efforts to ensure our workforce meets these requirements, Virginia Tech is launching a new, online IT security training course specifically for student employees on Aug. 14, via the PageUp Learning Management System.
The course, Cybersecurity Essentials for Student Employees, is designed to help student employees recognize and avoid common cybersecurity threats such as social engineering and phishing attacks, practice responsible stewardship of sensitive data and safe online browsing, and learn how to report suspicious activity. For most, the course will take 15 to 20 minutes to complete, and it can be taken on a computer or mobile device.
Who is required to take Cybersecurity Essentials for Student Employees?
All student-wage employees will be required to complete this course within 90 days of starting or resuming employment at the university. Additionally, graduate assistants who have not yet completed their required annual cybersecurity training will need to take this course.
All who are required to take the training will be assigned the course in PageUp, and will receive an email notification from VT Training <info-968@mail.pageuppeople.com> when the course is assigned to them. Multiple reminders will be sent once the student is within 30 days of the due date.
For supervisors of student employees
Because IT security training is a condition of employment, supervisors must provide student employees with time to complete the training during their work hours while clocked in.
Your help will be valuable in encouraging students to complete their training. Please include mention of this course in your onboarding materials or checklists. You can also follow up during performance check-ins to remind them to take the training.
