The sesquicentennial edition of the International Street Fair was held on Alumni Mall. Student organizations representing over 40 countries showcased their cultural heritage to festival goers. There were also 25 international dance and musical performances on stage. To round out the experience, regional food trucks served international cuisine. Over 175 international students and family members gathered on the Monday prior to Thanksgiving to celebrate and express gratitude. For many, it was their first time trying roast turkey. In addition to the meal, students took time to write things they were thankful for on small ornaments that they then hung on a "gratitude tree." The gathering was sponsored by Cranwell International Center.

They visited numerous campus research facilities, including the Drone Park. Cranwell International Center organizes the three-week program with a grant from the German-American Fulbright Commission. Virginia Tech is one of two host sites in the United States.

Students, commuters and campus visitors alike now have a fresh way to get around thanks to Roam NRV, a new bike share program launched through a regional partnership among Virginia Tech, Blacksburg and Christiansburg, and Montgomery County. There are currently 12 bike stations in the network with eight on the Virginia Tech campus. Seventy-five bikes are in circulation with plans to expand in the future.

A student-lead team designed the agBOT watermelon harvester to help aging farmers. The machine can autonomously identify and harvest ripe watermelons. A passive slapper mechanism thumps the watermelons in a way that is similar to how a person tests one at the supermarket, and an onboard microphone helps agBOT determine whether or not to harvest the watermelon.
