Abandoned on a property in southeastern Maryland, a pregnant mare and emaciated colt adopted by Amiya Veatch are now thriving, along with the mare's yearling, at the Veatch farm in Fort Washington, Maryland. Veatch, a member of the advisory council of Virginia Tech's Marion duPont Scott Equine Medical Center (EMC) in Leesburg, Virginia, brought the mare to EMC for specialized foaling care. On Aug. 16-17, 2019, the Virginia-Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine at Virginia Tech held a continuing education conference and reunion for all alumni, with special focus on the DVM classes of ’84, ’89, ’99, ’04, ’09, and ’14. Alumni attended a barbecue on Friday night, while the Saturday program featured tours of the college, a curriculum update, a deans' panel, award presentations, and individual class activities.

Because implementing weight-loss plans can be challenging for cats and pet owners alike, Megan Shepherd, assistant professor of clinical nutrition; Lauren Dodd, clinical nutrition resident; and study sponsor Purina set out to discover how owners' perceptions of their cats' quality of life were influenced by adding food toys to the cats' weight-loss regimen.
