Cadets Nolan Strong and Sullivan Matzek traveled with the Hokies to receive the flag at Saturday’s football game against North Carolina State.

The passing of the flags during the pre-game ceremonies was a continuation of the proud partnership between the Virginia Tech Corps of Cadets and Virginia Tech football to highlight the colors at every football game.

Three football players, chosen because of their performance in the last game or at practice, carry the American flag, the state flag, and the team’s spirit flag and lead the team onto the field. They deliver the flags to cadets at the south end of the field.

The cadets, also selected based on their performance in the corps, render honor to the flags and carry them off the field. At home games three first-year cadets are selected, and one or two upper-class cadets travel with the team and receive the flags at away games.

Strong is majoring in psychology in the College of Science. From Goochland, Virginia, Strong has proven himself to be an approachable and supportive leader who helps other cadets meet corps standards. A platoon sergeant in November Company, Strong shows up to cadet activities with high energy and puts other cadets before himself. He served as a member of the cadre staff for New Cadet Week and is also a midshipman in Naval ROTC.

Matzek is majoring in mechanical engineering in the College of Engineering. A sophomore in Oscar Company, he is a task-oriented and dependable cadet who cares for those around him. Matzek is a kind and well-rounded student that balances his academic class load and his cadet duties. He is from Maryville, Tennessee, and is a member of Air Force ROTC.
