Situational awareness: Bike larceny
From: Virginia Tech Police Department
On Sept. 9, 2025, the Virginia Tech Police Department received its fifth report of bicycle theft on the campus of Virginia Tech. These thefts occurred between Aug. 4 and Sept. 9, 2025.
Virginia Tech Police urge anyone with information related to these reports to contact Detective B. Hill at 540-231-8119 or email at brandonwhill@vt.edu.
The Virginia Tech Police Department recommends students lock bicycles to a bicycle rack to prevent thieves from riding away on them. The Police Department encourages individuals to invest in a U Lock that will protect the bicycle more thoroughly than a cable lock. Most U Locks are cut resistant, meaning a hacksaw or bolt cutters cannot break the lock unlike a cable lock. U Locks can be found at most department stores or bicycle shops.
VTPD also recommends that bike owners register their bikes in addition to adding individual identifying marks. Online registration can be found at: police.vt.edu/vtpd-services/bicycle-registration.html
The Virginia Tech Police Department reminds everyone to report all crime and suspicious activity/person(s) anywhere on campus immediately to the Virginia Tech Police Department at 540-382-4343 or by dialing 911. Anonymous tips can be reported online at: police.vt.edu/anonymous.html
