Lingjia Liu awarded professorship
Lingjia Liu, professor of electrical and computer engineering in the College of Engineering at Virginia Tech, has been awarded the Andrew J. Young Professorship in Electrical Engineering by the Virginia Tech Board of Visitors.
The Andrew J. Young Professorship in Electrical Engineering was established with a generous gift from Jim Young ’80 and his wife, Marianne Young. This endowed professorship supports the recognition of outstanding faculty excellence within the Bradley Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Virginia Tech.
A member of the Virginia Tech community since 2017, Liu’s scholarship focuses on 6G networks, machine learning for wireless, Open RAN, and dynamic spectrum access/sharing. His pioneering work has led to more than 200 peer-reviewed publications, 24 U.S. patents, and 136 foreign patents.
Liu is an Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers fellow, serves on the executive committee of the of the U.S. National Spectrum Consortium, and has been serving on the editorial boards of various leading international journals. He has held positions in the Mitsubishi Electric Research Laboratory and the Standards and Mobility Innovation Lab of Samsung Research America, where he twice received the Global Samsung Best Paper Award for his contributions to 4G standards.
Liu’s research impact is demonstrated by his award of more than 60 externally funded research projects worth $180 million. He is the lead principal investigator for the $10 million project 5G/FutureG Mobile Distributed MIMO: Learning Meets Spreading in Networking, one of the largest single awards in the history of the College of Engineering.
Liu also excels in teaching and student mentorship. In just 15 years in academia, Liu has advised 14 Ph.D. students, 11 master’s degree students, and four postdoctoral researchers and is currently mentoring 17 Ph.D. students and two postdoctoral researchers.
Liu received his bachelor’s degree from Shanghai Jiao Tong University and a Ph.D. from Texas A&M University.
