Jere Lane Johnson, retired construction inspector for the Division of Campus Planning, Infrastructure, and Facilities, passed away on Nov. 4. 

Johnson was born to the late Basil “Spike” and Sybil Baldwin Johnson in 1947. 

A U.S. Marine Corps veteran, Johnson served as a construction inspector for the Commonwealth of Virginia – including Virginia Tech’s Division of Campus Planning, Infrastructure, and Facilities – for 33 years. He was well known by his colleagues for being a “neat guy.”

Johnson enjoyed shooting sports, woodworking, gardening, and other arts and craft activities. 

Johnson is survived by his wife, Jo Irwin; daughter, Sheri; grandchildren Cullen, Delaney, Sullivan, and Amber; brother, Don; sister, Sandra Johnson McDowell; many brothers, sisters, and daughters-in-law; nieces; nephews; extended family; and friends.

Johnson is also preceded in death by his niece Cindy and his son, Christopher Brian.
