Scott Bailey named Bradley Senior Faculty Fellow

Scott Bailey, professor of electrical and computer engineering in the College of Engineering at Virginia Tech, has been named a Bradley Senior Faculty Fellow by the Virginia Tech Board of Visitors.

The Bradley Senior Faculty Fellowship recognizes faculty research excellence. Bailey will retain the fellowship for a period of five years.

A member of the Virginia Tech faculty since 2006, Bailey is known for his pioneering research in the fields of space and atmospheric science and, in particular, remote sensing of the Earth’s atmosphere. Since 2019, he has served as the director of the Center for Space Sciences and Engineering Research (Space@VT), a consortium of 25 researchers across the university with an annual research budget of $5 million from both internal and external sources.

Bailey has received 21 funded research projects totaling $12 million, 14 of them as the principal investigator. His scholarship has been funded by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, the National Science Foundation, and the Office of Naval Research. He has developed remote sensing instrumentation and has held key roles in the space flight of 13 research-grade instruments by satellite, sounding rocket, and stratospheric balloon.

Bailey has authored or co-authored two book chapters, 100 journal/magazine articles, and 17 conference/workshop papers. He has given 10 invited talks, lectures, seminars, or keynotes around the world. He has been a guest editor for the Journal of Atmospheric and Solar-Terrestrial Physics on four occasions and he has been a reviewer for a wide spectrum of journals and proposals from NASA and NSF. He is an active advisor to NASA and has served on numerous committees for them setting and communicating science priorities. He has chaired or co-chaired committees at 15 international conferences.

Over the course of his 25-year career in academia, Bailey has a strong record of advising and mentoring of graduate students. He has advised seven master’s degree thesis students to completion and six Ph.D. students. He has also been an external examiner or reviewer for three Ph.D. defenses in Sweden and Germany.

Bailey received his bachelor's degree from Virginia Tech and his master’s degree and Ph.D. from the University of Colorado.
