A dog leaping. A dancer tangled in black coral. An abandoned house. A cloud of dandelion fluff. A single teardrop.

These are just a few of the more than a hundred images depicting unexpectedly beautiful moments that are on display at the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine through October as part of the school’s ninth art show. The show, titled, “Life Is Beautiful: Unexpected Moments Captured in Art,” features watercolors, oil, digital art, photography, and textiles from 41 artists.

“Every show we’ve done has brought out some tremendous local talent,” said Dr. David Trinkle, the school’s associate dean for community and culture. “This show is no exception. With a stroll through our hallways, visitors will notice the little things all around us that inspire awe, peace, and compassion. And really, this is what our Creativity in Health Education Program is all about.”

The program, founded by Trinkle, strives to expand the social, cultural, and humanistic awareness of the school’s students. The program also aims to involve community members in the life of the school.

Community members are invited to attend the show’s official opening Aug. 21, from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Guests can view the art on the school’s first and second floors and attend a catered reception in the school’s atrium. The school is located at 2 Riverside Circle in Roanoke.

The building usually has restricted access, so the Aug. 21 event will provide an ideal opportunity for the public to view the artwork. Following the public opening, viewing of the art will be by appointment only. To schedule an appointment, email Lynne Pearo-Baker or call her at 540-526-2533.
