Angela Simmons named assistant vice president for student affairs, will lead student engagement initiatives
Angela Simmons, director of student conduct at Virginia Tech, has been named assistant vice president for student affairs.
In her new position, Simmons will provide leadership for a team focused on student engagement.
“This newly formed engagement team, headed by Angela Simmons will work together to identify the ways we can enhance the student experience,” said Patty Perillo, vice president for Student Affairs. “We are fortunate to have her lead this endeavor.”
“Engaging students in learning is the shared work of many, not only within the Division of Student Affairs, but also with our academic partners throughout the university,” said Perillo. “This new organizational alignment will strengthen our opportunities for collaboration, with a holistic approach that ensures a meaningful student experience from orientation through graduation.”
“I’m pleased to have an opportunity to lead a new Virginia Tech team in student engagement,” said Simmons. “I look forward to working with professionals dedicated to the growth and development of our students.”
Rohsaan Settle has been appointed interim director of student conduct. Settle currently serves as associate director.
Simmons will oversee the new alignment of operations in the following four units:
- VT Engage fosters civic partnerships by connecting the human and intellectual capital of Virginia Tech with local and global publics. This summer VT Engage will move to the Division of Student Affairs to form a dynamic partnership designed to help students reach their potential as engaged leaders in their communities.
- The Leadership Education Collaborative provides a road map and a set of experiences that enable students to attain the competencies necessary for global leadership.
- Student Centers and Activities provides a variety of educational opportunities, programs, facilities, and services that enhance student development and enrich the quality of campus life at Virginia Tech.
- New Student and Family Programs welcomes all new Hokies and their families to Virginia Tech and is responsible for helping with the transition to college life.
As part of the new structure, New Student and Family Programs will move to a new permanent home in Squires Student Center, while VT Engage relocates to New Hall West.
Prior to coming to Virginia Tech, Simmons was director of the Center for Student Involvement and Leadership at Millersville University. She received a bachelor's degree in educational psychology and a master's degree in counselor education, both from Mississippi State University.
She will finish her doctoral degree requirements in higher education from Florida State University this August.
