Bill Foy joins student affairs as director of communications and innovative technologies
Bill Foy has been named director of communications and innovative technologies for the Division of Student Affairs at Virginia Tech. He began his new position July 25, 2013.
“With a long and notable career in broadcast journalism and state government public relations, Bill brings both extraordinary experience and a fresh perspective to this position,” said Patty Perillo, vice president for Student Affairs. “Bill will give leadership to a talented staff that will raise awareness of the important programs and services the Division of Student Affairs offers to Virginia Tech students and their families.”
Prior to his Virginia Tech appointment, Foy served as director of news, marketing, and promotion at WSET-TV since 2007. There, he managed a staff of more than 40 broadcast professionals. Most recently, their work was named Virginia’s Outstanding Newscast in 2012 by the Virginia Association of Broadcasters. Foy’s service and distinguished performance have been recognized with an Edward R. Murrow regional award for breaking news coverage in 2012 and a Douglas S. Freeman award for public service through television journalism in 2011.
As public relations manager for the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles and the Virginia Department of Behavioral Health, Foy interacted with news media, legislators, stakeholders, and key personnel in the private sector. He was a primary liaison with other state agencies, including the governor’s press staff. Foy has coordinated both internal and external communications, as well as Web content and social media.
“I’m very pleased to be joining the Virginia Tech student affairs team, and delighted to have the opportunity to work with professionals so dedicated to the growth and development of our students," said Foy.
Foy has strong ties to Virginia Tech. He is a Hokie alumnus with a degree in communication. He is also the father of two Virginia Tech graduates. Foy served on the Virginia Tech communications alumni advisory board from 2004 to 2005.
