Jon Greene has been named associate director for strategic planning and development at the Institute for Critical Technology and Applied Science at Virginia Tech.

In this new position, Greene will be responsible for strategic research development of multimillion-dollar, interdisciplinary proposals; strategic planning and execution; development and maintenance of the institute’s strategic plan; metrics and benchmarking; and internal and external communications. He will retain his position as the institute's research thrust leader for national security and will continue to mentor the activities of the institute’s four program managers.

Greene came to the university in September 2009 as the institute's program manager responsible for facilitating innovative research projects and activities devoted to national defense. He has focused his efforts on national security solutions offered by applied autonomy, cognition and communication, energy, cybersecurity, and advanced weapons systems.

He has managed and developed research and funding opportunities for the Center for Naval Systems and oversaw the center’s first major funding opportunity, a $7.5-million contract with the Naval Surface Warfare Center Dahlgren Division. He also provided support to Naren Ramakrishnan, Thomas L. Phillips Professor of Engineering in the Department of Computer Science, who is the principal investigator for an institute-assembled research team that secured a potential $13.3-million, three-year contract from the Intelligence Advanced Research Projects Activity, a research arm of the Office of the Director of National Intelligence.

Prior to coming to Virginia Tech, Greene spent 28 years with the Navy where he rose to commanding officer of the Naval Surface Warfare Center, Dam Neck, Virginia Beach, Va. There he led a 350-person research and development organization that focused on systems of systems integration, interoperability, and integrated training capabilities. His military experience has given him extensive knowledge of all 12 Naval Sea System Command Warfare centers, the Space and Naval Warfare System centers, the Naval Air Warfare centers, the Office of Naval Research, and other potential Department of Defense research sponsors.

Greene received a master's degree in national security affairs from the Navy Postgraduate School and a bachelor degree in political science from the United States Naval Academy. He served as a member of the Armed Forces Communications and Electronics Association, the U.S. Naval Institute, the National Defense Industry Association, and the Hampton Roads Technology Council.

“I am pleased that Jon has accepted this promotion,” said Roop Mahajan, director of the Institute for Critical Technology and Applied Science. “He has strengthened our relationships with defense-related organizations. He has created invaluable exposure opportunities for Virginia Tech research programs and faculty and has successfully guided our efforts to secure interdisciplinary, multimillion-dollar research funding. Jon exemplifies the nimbleness and can-do attitude needed to make Virginia Tech a premier transformative, interdisciplinary research institution focused on achieving a sustainable future for all.”
