Markus Breitschmid authors book on the work of Swiss architects Christ and Gantenbein
Markus Breitschmid, associate professor in the College of Architecture and Urban Studies, and co–author Victora Easton have just released “Christ & Gantenbein: Around the Corner,” a book on the œuvre of Basel, Switzerland-based architects Emanuel Christ and Christoph Gantenbein.
Christ and Gantenbein are prominent, internationally successful Swiss architects who have completed buildings in Switzerland, Great Britain, China, Germany, and Mexico. “Christ & Gantenbein: Around the Corner” is the first book that presents the ideational and theoretical underpinnings of Christ and Gantenbein’s architecture. The book is published by the German press Hatje & Cantz in English and German.
Markus Breitschmid has been teaching at Virginia Tech since 2004 and currently serves as chair of the Core Professional Bachelor of Architecture Program in the School of Architecture + Design. Prior to joining Virginia Tech, Breitschmid was the 2003 Visiting Historian for Architecture and Urbanism at Cornell University. He has served as an assistant professor, instructor, and visiting scholar at several European and American universities and has been a visiting lecturer and critic at many universities in America, Europe, and Asia.
Breitschmid has authored six books in addition to “Christ & Gantenbein: Around the Corner” and has edited or contributed chapters to numerous others. In addition to his work as an author on architecture, Breitschmid is an internationally active architectural theoretician and historian.
Breitschmid received his education in Switzerland, the United States and Germany. He is a registered architect and a member of the Swiss Institute of Architects and Engineers and received his Master of Architecture degree from Virginia Tech and a Ph.D. in engineering science from the Technische Universität Berlin.
