Virginia Tech celebrates Black History Month through Feb. 29, John Legend to perform
Join the Virginia Tech community as it celebrates Black History Month with a variety of cultural events focusing on this year’s theme, Black Women in American Culture and History, including a keynote performance by Grammy award-winning artist John Legend.
The celebration continues through the end of February. All events are free and open to the public unless otherwise noted.
Scheduled events include the following.
- Fulfilling Your Dream: Mariak Machok Chuor, A Lost Boy of South Sudan, on Wednesday, Feb. 8, from 6-8:30 p.m. in Room G of the Graduate Life Center. Chuor will discuss his life during the decades-long Sudanese Civil War, his journey to the United States, and will read from his book, “Rebuilding What Had Been Destroyed.” This event is free and open to the public. The office of Multicultural Programs and Services and Minorities in Agriculture, Natural Resources, and Related Sciences organization are sponsoring this event. Contact Keyana C. - Black Queens of the Mic, a celebration of female rappers and lyricists, on Friday, Feb. 10, 8-10 p.m. at Deet’s Place. This open mic event invites people to get up on stage and discuss the work of their favorite female artists, or recite their own original work. The event is free and open to the public. It is sponsored by Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Inc. and Expressions. Contact Adil Kadir for more information.
- The keynote performance, An Evening of Music and Discussion with John Legend, on Thursday, Feb. 23, in Burruss Auditorium. Doors open at 6:30 p.m., and the show begins at 7:30. Tickets are $10 with a Hokie Passport card and $20 for general admission if purchased prior to the day of the show. All tickets purchased the day of the show will be $20. Tickets will be available online, or by calling 540-231-5615. Check the box office website for ticket sale updates. This event is sponsored by Virginia Tech’s Black Organizations Council, Black Student Alliance, office of Multicultural Programs and Services, Student Government Association, and Virginia Tech Union.

Free parking for Burruss Auditorium is available around the Drillfield with a visitor’s pass from 5 p.m.-8 p.m. No pass is necessary on the Drillfield after 8 p.m. or on weekends. Parking is also available in the Perry Street Lots and the Perry Street Parking Garage near Prices Fork Road.
For the Graduate Life Center, free parking is available after 5 p.m. in the Squires Lot, located at the corner of College Avenue and Otey Street, or the Architecture Annex Lot also on Otey Street. Parking meters within the Squires Lot will need to be paid.
For events at Deet’s Place, free parking is available after 5 p.m. in the Coliseum Lot located along Washington Street and Spring Road.
