Nathan Hall joins University Libraries as VTechWorks Librarian
Nathan Hall has joined the Virginia Tech University Libraries as the VTechWorks librarian. He will direct projects for VTechWorks, a library service for organizing and disseminating the work of faculty and students as core collections, as well as a tool for adding value to existing library collections through digitization and curation.
Hall comes to Virginia Tech from the University of North Texas, where he was digital curation librarian. At UNT, Hall managed digital collections, which included the processing of digital materials, and explored new ways of building digital content.
“I am excited about representing content in new ways, and having a wide global audience use information that Virginia Tech produces,” Hall said.
“We’re ecstatic about the experience that Nathan brings Virginia Tech’s University Libraries that will benefit the development of the university’s research repository, VTechWorks,” Gail McMillan, director of digital library and archives, said.
In his new role, Hall will reach out to the Virginia Tech community to promote digital library services. He has already begun reaching out to faculty and graduate students, supporting their grant applications and helping them to access unique resources, such as developing data management plans for National Science Foundation grants.
Hall is working to complete a Ph.D. in digital library evaluation from UNT, and earned his masters of library science there. He holds a bachelor’s degree from St. Lawrence University in New York.
The Virginia Tech University Libraries were established in 1872 with 500 volumes. Today, the libraries' holdings include 2.6 million volumes, and provide access to a large collection of electronic databases and full-content journals, as well as the VTechWorks university repository. The libraries include the Carol M. Newman Main Library, and branch libraries for Art and Architecture, Veterinary Medicine, and the Northern Virginia Resource Service Center. The University Libraries are also a selective depository for federal documents and a member of the prestigious Association of Research Libraries. The University Libraries provide and promote access to information resources for the achievement of Virginia Tech's objectives in teaching, learning, research, creativity, and community service.
