Dr. Evelyn Garcia has been named the chair of the Department of Radiology at the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine.

Garcia, an assistant professor of radiology at the school, also serves as chair and medical director for the Department of Radiology at Carilion Clinic.

“Dr. Garcia has a wealth of experience, not only in her specialty of radiology, but also as a medical educator,” said Dr. Cynda Ann Johnson, founding dean of the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine. “She is a natural fit to be a leader for the radiology department.”

Garcia has been actively involved with the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine, even prior to her appointment as chair of radiology. Shortly after she joined Carilion Clinic in July 2008, she gained an appointment at the school as an assistant professor in January 2009. In addition, Garcia has actively been involved in the school’s admissions process this year, serving as a member of the admissions committee.

“I have enjoyed being part of the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine’s admissions committee, getting the opportunity to select the students best suited to fulfill the school’s mission of developing physician thought leaders,” said Garcia. “I look forward to serving in an additional leadership role at the school.”

Garcia received her bachelor’s degree from the University of California, Irvine. She went on to complete two years at the Ohio University College of Osteopathic Medicine before transferring to the University of New Mexico School of Medicine where she received her medical degree as well as being elected to Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society. Garcia completed her residency at the University of New Mexico Hospital. After being in private practice in Illinois for several years, she completed a fellowship in body imaging at the University of Utah. While there, Garcia directed the fourth year medical student radiology elective for two of the three years of her combined faculty/fellowship appointment to the staff of the University of Utah Hospital.

Dr. R. Wayne Gandee formerly served as chair of the Department of Radiology at the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine. He is now interim chief medical officer for Carilion Clinic, replacing Dr. Mark Werner who left Carilion Clinic in February for a position with Fairview Health System in Minneapolis.
