Theme housing offers engaging living options tailored to student interests
Incoming and returning Virginia Tech students may now apply online for theme housing for fall semester. With a variety of options to suit all interests, theme housing is a great way to meet other students, get access to the tools needed to succeed in college, and join the campus community.
Virginia Tech offers 11 theme housing options for students, focused on academics, diversity, leadership, shared interests, and lifestyle choices. Students who live in theme housing communities are often more likely to have higher cumulative grade point averages, more frequent interactions with peers and professors, higher rates of class attendance, and increased participation in faculty mentorship programs than their non-theme housing peers.
“[At the WELL theme community], I lived alongside a group of spectacular individuals who shared a common interest in pursuing well-rounded, healthy lifestyles,” said Liz Blackwell of Harrisonburg, Va., a junior in the College of Science, majoring in chemistry and psychology. “Being around those individuals encouraged me to make wise decisions and helped me find my footing in the college world. Choosing to live in the WELL was the best decision I have made in my college career.”
Incoming freshmen are welcome to apply to the Biological and Life Sciences Community, Residential Leadership Community, the WELL, Wing, World, Galileo, Hypatia, MOSAIC, and SERVE. Current students may only apply to the World or the WELL as new applicants or returning students, and to MOSAIC as returning students only. The Virginia Tech Corps of Cadets, Oak Lane housing community, and the Hillcrest and Main Campbell Honors programs are available by invitation or separate application only.
In order to apply for a theme housing program, students must first accept their offer of admission to Virginia Tech, then use their PID and password to begin an application online. Students may apply to up to two programs, with most program applications consisting of multiple short answer or essay questions. Once the application is submitted, a selection committee will review the application.
“Getting involved on campus can be difficult at such a large school, and it’s important for students not to feel like they’ve just been thrown into college,” said Blackwell. “Theme housing is a great way to meet other students, establish yourself within the community, and branch out from there.”
