Paul Estabrooks named Society of Behavioral Medicine Fellow
Paul Estabrooks of Blacksburg, Va., associate professor of human nutrition, foods and exercise in Virginia Tech's College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, was elected into the Society of Behavioral Medicine College of Fellows.
Estabrooks was formally presented with the honor at the Society of Behavioral Medicine annual meeting in Montreal, Quebec, on April 23.
The rank of fellow is bestowed on society members who have made substantial contributions to the field of behavioral medicine through research, teaching, professional practice, and/or public service. Research meriting fellow status represents a multidisciplinary, interdisciplinary, or transdisciplinary approach and has a demonstrable impact on the research of others or the practice of behavioral medicine.
Estabrooks’ research focuses primarily on the development and implementation of behavioral physical activity, nutrition, and weight management policies, practices, and programs. During his career, Estabrooks has received numerous awards, including the Early Career Distinguished Scientist Award from the American Society for the Psychology of Sport and Physical Activity, the Cooper Institute of Aerobic Fitness Young Investigator Award, and the Society of Behavioral Medicine Distinguished Service Award.
Estabrooks earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Calgary, then went on to receive his Ph.D. from the University of Western Ontario. He began his career at Virginia Tech as an associate professor in 2007, and he leads Virginia Tech’s translational obesity research program. Additionally, Estabrooks has authored more than 70 journal articles and given more than 20 invited presentations at national and international conferences.
