Robert J. Bodnar, University Distinguished Professor of Geochemistry in the College of Science at Virginia Tech, has been conferred the title of University Distinguished Professor Emeritus by the Virginia Tech Board of Visitors.

The emeritus title may be conferred on retired faculty members who are specially recommended to the board by Virginia Tech President Tim Sands in recognition of exemplary service to the university. Nominated individuals who are approved by the board receive a copy of the resolution and a certificate of appreciation.

A member of the Virginia Tech community for 40 years, Bodnar has made significant contributions to the geosciences, as recognized by his election to the National Academy of Science in 2023, then becoming one of only four members of the Academy in the entire university. He has been recognized through numerous national and international awards, including the Thomas Jefferson Medal for Outstanding Contributions to Natural Science and the Virginia Outstanding Scientist award. Bodnar is an elected fellow in nine professional societies – four of which are international - including the American Association for the Advancement of Science.

He taught a wide variety of undergraduate and graduate courses ranging across the geosciences’ curriculum, placing strong emphasis on student learning and outcomes, and successfully advised 18 master’s theses and 31 doctoral dissertations, helping each student develop successful careers in both academic and industrial settings.

Additionally, Bodnar started and led the Department of Geosciences successful study abroad program in Riva San Vitale, Switzerland.
