Heather Wagoner selected as assistant vice president of Student Engagement for Student Affairs
Heather Wagoner has been selected as Student Affairs' next assistant vice president for Student Engagement. A dedicated member of the Student Affairs team, Wagoner devotes her energy to helping students find connection, purpose, and community at Virginia Tech.
With more than 20 years of experience in higher education, Wagoner has built a career centered on creating environments where students feel welcomed, supported, and empowered to thrive. Her work has consistently reflected a belief that engagement is fundamental to student success and that meaningful experiences outside the classroom can have a lasting impact on students' lives.
“I am thrilled to shape the student experience with brilliant partners who care deeply for our student community,” Wagoner said. “Student engagement enhances student learning, sense of belonging, leadership development, and joy. It is work worthy of a champion, and I am excited to take on that role wholeheartedly.”
Wagoner previously served as senior director of student engagement and community centers. During her tenure, she championed a period of growth and innovation across Student Engagement and Campus Life, helping bring to life initiatives such as The Source, the Passport Acceptance Facility, and The Chillfield; significant venue improvements, including the Commonwealth Ballroom; advancing student engagement efforts through programs such as Strengths for Students and Residential Well-Being; and helping welcome the Cultural and Community Centers back to Student Affairs.
Perhaps most importantly, Wagoner has helped foster a culture of belonging and care by championing a community-centered approach that encourages students and colleagues alike to feel seen, heard, and valued. Her collaborative leadership style, commitment to student development, and ability to build meaningful partnerships have strengthened the student experience across our university.
Wagoner's impact extends beyond Virginia Tech through her leadership in the profession, including service with the Association of College Unions International. She has also contributed to several university initiatives, including the Provost Commission on Fraternity and Sorority Culture, the Student Governance Task Force, and the Student Affairs Staff Enrichment Task Force.
In her new role, Wagoner will provide strategic leadership for Fraternity and Sorority Life, Cranwell International Center, Student Engagement and Campus Life, including the Cultural and Community Centers, VT Engage, and Living Learning Programs. She will continue working closely with students, faculty, and staff to create opportunities that foster engagement, build community, and support student success.
