Jordan Budhu, assistant professor of electrical and computer engineering in the Bradley Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering in the College of Engineering at Virginia Tech, has been reappointed the Steven O. Lane Junior Faculty Fellow by the Virginia Tech Board of Visitors.

The Steven O. Lane Junior Faculty Fellowship was established in 2004 with a generous gift from Joanne Joe to provide financial support for junior faculty in the College of Engineering at Virginia Tech. Steven O. Lane, a 1978 graduate of Virginia Tech, was a worldwide leader in spacecraft antenna design who spent his entire career with Boeing Satellite Systems. In keeping with the donor’s intent, the fellowship supports a junior faculty member conducting research in antennas, electromagnetics, or related fields.

A member of the Virginia Tech community since 2022, Budhu has earned a reputation as a talented researcher in electromagnetics, especially as applied to electromagnetic metamaterials, metasurfaces, and spacecraft antennas.

His publication record includes 19 journal articles, 44 refereed conference papers, one book chapter, and two patents. He has earned numerous honors, including most recently the 2026 Best Antenna Theory and Design Paper Award at the European Conference on Antennas and Propagation, the 2025 Best Paper Award at the Industry Paper Competition by the IEEE Antennas and Propagation Society and the International Union of Radio Science, and multiple nominations for the R.W.P. King Best Transactions Paper Award.

Budhu is an active member of his professional community as an IEEE senior member and a member of the U.S. National Committee of the International Union of Radio Science Commission B. He has convened special sessions at the IEEE Antennas and Propagation Society conferences and served as lead guest associate editor for a special cluster of the "IEEE Antennas and Wireless Propagation Letters." Budhu was also recently awarded a DARPA Young Faculty Award to explore whether living, bioprinted materials can be engineered to interact with electromagnetic waves.

He is also a dedicated educator who has developed and taught graduate courses in electromagnetics and metamaterials at Virginia Tech, with recorded lectures made publicly available.

Budhu earned a Ph.D. from the University of California, Los Angeles.
