Osman Balci, professor of computer science in the College of Engineering at Virginia Tech, has been conferred the title of professor emeritus by the Virginia Tech Board of Visitors.

The emeritus title may be conferred on retired faculty members who are specially recommended to the board by Virginia Tech President Tim Sands in recognition of exemplary service to the university. Nominated individuals who are approved by the board receive a copy of the resolution and a certificate of appreciation.

A member of the Virginia Tech community for 45 years, Balci made significant research, teaching, and leadership contributions in engineering and in arts and sciences. He taught eight different undergraduate and six different graduate courses and developed courses in new areas of computer science, including mobile software development and cloud software development — for which he received the W. S. “Pete” White Innovation in Engineering Education Award in 2018.

By serving as president and co-founder of Orca Computer Inc. at the Virginia Tech Corporate Research Center from May 1995 to May 2012, he conducted technology transfer of his U.S. Navy-funded research. He provided technical services to the U.S. Senate cybersecurity branch from 2015 to 2020 and served as an expert witness in numerous litigations. He served as founding editor-in-chief of two international journals: Annals of Software Engineering (1993-2002) and World Wide Web (1996-2000).

Balci shared his considerable expertise by authoring or co-authoring numerous refereed journal articles, book chapters, and conference and workshop papers and gave various tutorials, keynotes, and invited talks, demonstrations, and other presentations.

In recognition of his work, he received numerous professional honors and awards, including the Association for Computing Machinery Special Interest Group on Simulation and Modeling Distinguished Contributions Award, the Society for Modeling and Simulation International McLeod Founder's Award for Distinguished Service, and several teaching excellence awards.

Balci received a Ph.D. from Syracuse University.
