Anthony M. Purcell, Dining Services assistant director for Southgate Center, passed on June 15, 2026. He was 62. 

Purcell recently celebrated 35 years of service with the university. His career with Dining began prior to joining the catering department, where he became director in 1990.

In 2008, Purcell transitioned into his role as assistant director of Southgate Center, ensuring product and service support to all six dining centers on the Blacksburg campus. In this position, he made a lasting impact on the department as a strong advocate for the employees he led.

"Anthony touched countless lives during his time at Virginia Tech," said Brian Grove, director of Dining Services. "I am deeply grateful to have had the opportunity to learn from him. 

"Anthony was a champion, a mentor, and an important influence in my professional journey. He extended that same guidance and support to many others, serving as a mentor and to some, a father figure."

Purcell proudly served in the Army Reserve and was a member of Phi Beta Sigma. He thoroughly enjoyed sports of all kinds, spending time with his family, and doing yard work as a reminder of time with his mother. He was a lover of animals and an advocate for their care.

Purcell's longstanding commitment and steady presence contributed profoundly to the Dining Services community and to the experiences of countless students over his years with the university.
