Kirk Cameron, professor of computer science and managing director of the Institute for Advanced Computing at Virginia Tech, has been honored with an appointment as a Boeing Endowed Professor by the Virginia Tech Board of Visitors.

This Boeing endowed professorship was established with a generous gift from The Boeing Company to recognize a distinguished professor at the Institute for Advanced Computing who has shown outstanding scholarship, innovation, and leadership in advanced computing, communications, and technologies of national and global importance.

A member of the Virginia Tech community since 2005, Cameron is an internationally recognized leader in data centers, energy-efficient high-performance parallel and distributed systems design, and server and supercomputer power-performance benchmarking. He developed the PowerPack Toolkit that helped establish methodologies used by academia and industry worldwide to assess the energy efficiency of computers.

“Kirk’s pioneering research was among the first to focus on energy efficiency in data centers and supercomputers," said Christian Julien, department head, Department of Computer Science, who nominated Cameron for the Boeing Endowed Professorship. "His benchmarking methodologies and measurement frameworks developed in the early 2000s have become widely adopted standards and best practices that have influenced the design and operation of computing systems worldwide for more than two decades. His former students now hold leadership positions in prominent technology companies, research organizations, startups, and universities around the world."

Cameron’s research portfolio is exemplary, with more than 140 peer-reviewed articles and numerous competitive research grants, including a National Science Foundation Faculty Early Career Development (CAREER) Program award and a U.S. Department of Energy Early Career Award.

He designed the PowerPack Toolkit, an early framework for measuring and managing energy consumption in computer systems, and then adapted its methodologies for use in accurate, repeatable, and trustworthy benchmarking of energy-efficient computing systems.

The Green500 List, which he co-founded in 2006, helped drive and track more than a 200-fold efficiency improvement in high-performance computing and remains the most widely recognized measure of supercomputer energy efficiency.

As a co-founder of SPECpower, Cameron helped extend the PowerPack methodology to enterprise servers, creating what became the industry-standard benchmark for server energy efficiency. Since 2009, SPECpower has helped drive roughly an order-of-magnitude improvement in the energy efficiency of servers deployed in modern data centers. The benchmark was subsequently adopted by the ENERGY STAR program, meaning that the principles embodied in PowerPack continue to influence the design and procurement of servers used throughout government and industry.

Cameron was named a fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) and a distinguished scientist of the Association for Computing Machinery for his contributions to sustainable and energy-aware computing in large-scale systems.

He has graduated eight Ph.D. students and has advised numerous master’s students and over a hundred undergraduate researchers, many of whom now serve in faculty positions at major research universities or hold leadership roles at companies including Amazon, Google, Microsoft, Apple, and Meta.

Beyond research and teaching, Cameron has been a strong leader in outreach and public engagement. As managing director of the Institute for Advanced Computing, former associate vice president for academic affairs, and former director of the stack@cs Center for Computing Systems, Cameron has played a major leadership role in shaping Virginia Tech’s computing and innovation initiatives. He has led efforts in faculty recruitment, graduate education, industry engagement, and statewide workforce development, helping position Virginia Tech as a national leader in advanced computing and technology talent development.

Cameron received his bachelor’s degree from the University of Florida and his Ph.D. from the Louisiana State University.
