Professor's impact continues on through new forestry management fellowship

The College of Natural Resources and Environment has established the Harold E. Burkhart Endowed Memorial Fellowship, creating new funding opportunities for graduate students pursuing advanced study in forest management.

Funded through contributions from family, alumni, and partners across the forestry community, the fellowship honors Burkhart’s lasting influence on forest science and the generations of students he mentored. The endowment will provide annual support to one or more graduate students, helping reduce financial barriers and expand access to hands-on research and professional development.

“This fellowship reflects who my father was at his core: an educator and mentor who was deeply committed to his students,” said Qato Burkhart, Harold Burkhart’s son. “He would be proud to know that this funding will support future generations of students in the science and practice of forest management.”

The endowed fund was created through a combined effort of donors, including a significant gift from the Virginia Forestry Educational Foundation, along with contributions from Burkhart’s family, colleagues, and former students. The endowment will exist in perpetuity to support forestry graduate education.

“Dr. Burkhart’s work shaped modern forestry and influenced professionals across the country,” said Ken Morgan of the Virginia Forestry Educational Foundation. “His counsel from serving on our board of directors was above measure. Supporting graduate students in his name is an investment in the future of the field he helped define.”

A longtime faculty member in the university’s forestry program, Burkhart was widely recognized for his leadership in forest growth and yield science and for his commitment to student success. His research helped advance how forests are measured and managed, while his mentorship helped launch the careers of countless forestry professionals.

“This fellowship carries forward Dr. Burkhart’s commitment to students and to the future of forestry,” said Easton Loving, chair of the Dean’s Advisory Council. “It creates opportunities for graduate students to focus on meaningful research and ensures his influence continues through the people and work that shape the field.”

Administered by the college, the endowed fellowship aligns with Virginia Tech’s land-grant mission by investing in students who will address complex challenges in forest management.

“Dr. Burkhart’s legacy is reflected not only in his internationally recognized scholarship in applied forest measurement, but also in the generations of students, landowners, and forestry professionals he influenced throughout his career,” said Saskia van de Gevel, dean of the College of Natural Resources and Environment. “The Harold E. Burkhart Endowed Memorial Fellowship ensures that his impact will continue through the support and development of future forestry leaders.”

By supporting graduate students in the Department of Forest Resources and Environmental Conservation, the fund strengthens the pipeline of researchers and practitioners working to sustain forest ecosystems in Virginia and beyond.

“The impact Dr. Burkhart had on forestry is lasting, but his greatest legacy is the people he mentored, including me,” said Jan Kennedy, a longtime support of the college and owner of the Acorn Alcinda Tree Farm. “This fellowship honors that by supporting the next generation of leaders in the field.”
