More than 6,500 to be awarded degrees in commencement ceremonies
The University Commencement ceremony will begin at 8:30 a.m. ET Friday
Virginia Tech will celebrate graduating students, and their families during commencement ceremonies at various locations starting Wednesday, May 13, and running through Sunday, May 17.
Ceremonies begin Wednesday. The Graduate School’s ceremony starts at 3 p.m. (all times are ET) at Cassell Coliseum, and the Virginia-Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine will honor its Bachelor of Science in Public Health, Master of Science, and Master of Science in Public Health graduates at 6 p.m. at the Center for the Arts.

On Friday, the University Commencement ceremony begins at 8:30 a.m. ET at Lane Stadium. Virginia Gov. Abigail Spanberger will deliver the commencement address, continuing the university’s tradition of inviting new Virginia governors to deliver the address.
Virginia Tech will honor 6,741 bachelor’s degree candidates from all colleges throughout the week. This year, 3,566 graduating Hokies completed their baccalaureate degree programs with honors, having achieved cumulative GPAs of at least 3.4 on a 4.0 scale.
Here’s a look at the number of those receiving bachelor’s degrees from each college:
- College of Engineering: 2,084
- Pamplin College of Business: 1,345
- College of Liberal Arts and Human Sciences: 1,021
- College of Science: 1,002
- College of Agriculture and Life Sciences: 585
- College of Architecture, Arts, and Design: 380
- College of Natural Resources and Environments: 238
- Virginia-Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine (public health): 86
Note: The Bachelor of Science in public health is offered by the Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine.
In all, 1,879 students will be receiving graduate degrees. A total of 265 doctoral recipients is expected for hooding at the Blacksburg commencement and an additional 12 in the greater Washington, D.C., area.
Here’s a look at the number of those earning graduate degrees:
- Master’s degrees: 1,306
- Ph.D.s: 352
- Advanced graduate certificates: 209
- Ed.D.s: 10
- Education specialists: 2
The Virginia-Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine plans to hand out Doctor of Veterinary Medicine to 123 recipients on Friday. The Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine honored 52 graduates at its ceremony May 10.
The Virginia Tech Corps of Cadets is recognizing 275 graduates from its program. Of those, 169 will be entering service in the military as commissioned officers this summer: 78 in the U.S. Army, 42 in the U.S. Navy and U.S. Marine Corps, and 49 in the U.S Air Force. In addition, 60 are Citizen-Leader Track graduates, with the remainder of the list returning next semester to complete their undergraduate academic degree requirements.
