Virginia Tech has formed the search committee to oversee an internal search for the next executive director of the Institute for Society, Culture, and Environment (ISCE).

Reporting to the senior vice president for research and innovation, the executive director will shape the institute’s strategic direction, lead a social science research agenda by catalyzing innovative, translational research and scholarship, and foster collaboration across colleges. As a member of Virginia Tech’s senior leadership team, the executive director will engage with key councils and initiatives to elevate the university’s research profile, advance the university’s Beyond Boundaries vision, and leverage the institute’s social science–focused initiatives and broad partnerships.

The new executive director will replace Karen Roberto, who will retire after 20 years of leadership as the institute’s inaugural executive director, in August.

  • Lisa McNair, professor, Department of Engineering Education, will chair this search. Search committee members are:
  • Yancey Crawford, associate director for faculty development and administration, ISCE
  • Carlos Evia Puerto, associate dean of strategic initiatives and chief technology officer, School of Communication
  • Jim Hawdon, professor, Department of Sociology
  • Kathy Hosig, professor, and director of the Center for Public Health Practice and Research
  • Luke Juran, associate professor, Department of Geography
  • Shalini Misra, associate professor, Department of Urban and Environmental Policy and Planning
  • Sudipta Saragani, professor and department head, Department of Economics

The Office for Research and Innovation will be overseeing the internal search. The successful candidate, currently with tenure, will serve in a joint, calendar year appointment between their current academic department and the institute. The individual will have academic and institute responsibilities during the academic year with full institute responsibilities during the summer term.

Inquiries about this position may be directed to Lynn Byrd, human resources director, Office of Research and Innovation.

The position description, application process, and search updates are available in PageUp.
