Tom Mayock joined Virginia Tech’s “Curious Conversations” to talk about recent research that shows a relationship between single-family rental housing and educational outcomes. He explained the historical and evolving landscape of rental markets and the work he and his colleagues did that point to a rise in student achievement when units are located in the bounds of high-achieving school districts.

“Curious Conversations” is available on Spotify, Apple, and YouTube.

Takeaways

The 2009 Great Recession created a surge in single-family home rentals.

By analyzing housing and students’ data in North Carolina, Mayock and his colleagues found that students who moved into single-family rentals within the bounds of high-achieving school districts saw a rise in performance on standardized testing.

Mayock said that policymakers could consider increasing single-family rental options as a means of promoting educational equity.
