In memoriam: Warren R. Kark, professor emeritus of architecture and former university architect
Warren R. Kark, professor emeritus of architecture and former university architect at Virginia Tech, died on Dec. 1, 2025.
Kark was a member of the architecture faculty from 1966-2002 and was named professor emeritus of architecture in November 2002. During his 36 years at the university, he distinguished himself as a dedicated educator, accomplished practitioner, and visionary planner.
A graduate of the University of Michigan, where he earned a bachelor's degree in architecture, and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he received a Master of Architecture, Kark was a dedicated teacher in design laboratories and made special contributions to teaching courses about the practice and business aspects of architecture.
His commitment to students continued after his retirement through the Warren R. Kark Architectural Design Competition Endowed Fund, supporting the School of Architecture’s Third-Year Design Competition.
“Warren Kark’s impact on our school and university has been profound,” said Jim Bassett, director of the School of Architecture. “His distinguished professional practice and steadfast commitment to education have left an enduring mark on our community.
“Through the Warren R. Kark Architectural Design Competition Endowed Fund, Warren and Margie Kark have continued to uplift our students, especially those in the pivotal Third-Year Competition, where the discipline meets the practice of architecture. His legacy lives on in the work and aspirations of those he continues to inspire.”
From 1980-90, Kark served as university architect, guiding campus development during a transformative decade. He forged a campus master plan encompassing more than 30 projects that earned statewide and national recognition and continues to guide the university’s physical development.
Kark established an international reputation for his knowledge of educational-facilities architecture and master planning, which led to a project beginning in 1998 to develop a campus master plan for a new university in Şile, Turkey, near the Black Sea.
In addition to his career at the university, Kark maintained a private architecture practice in the New River Valley for more than 60 years, designing more than 40 residences.
His support of Virginia Tech extended beyond the classroom and campus planning. Warren and Margie Kark donated several sculptures to the Hahn Horticulture Garden, including kinetic works and the “Garden Sprite.” Their sandstone rendition of Frank Lloyd Wright’s “Maid in the Mud” continues to enhance the space as a place of reflection, learning, and gathering for students and visitors.
Tentative plans are also underway to establish a memorial garden for Warren Kark within the Hahn Horticulture Garden. The envisioned project would renovate and expand the existing conifer garden, adding new pathways and a seating area and incorporating the previously donated kinetic sculptures already situated in the space.
