VMCVM Faculty Spotlight: Andrew Mann
Andrew Mann
Director of Marketing and Communications
When did you join the veterinary college?
December 2019
The best part of being a faculty is?
Working alongside people who genuinely save lives before lunch — and then go do it again after.
Best advice I've gotten...
Two
1.From the Royal Marines — "five minutes early is on time."
2. And from marketing research — 95% of people are not ready to buy (so only 5% are!) and will ignore what you do. Not because it's not good, but because they're just not ready yet.
How would you capture the essence of your work in a newspaper headline?
"BREAKING: Local Man Discovers 99% of Brilliant People Are Terrible at Talking About Themselves — Builds Career to Fixing It"
My hidden talent...
I'm a pretty decent underwater photographer. My heart rate actually goes down underwater, not up.
A person who has inspired me...
Jacques Cousteau
(for those that might not know - a French oceanographer, filmmaker, and conservationist who revolutionized underwater exploration. He co-invented the Aqua-Lung, an open-circuit underwater breathing apparatus that allowed divers to explore the ocean more freely.)
Words of encouragement to a current veterinary college student...
Having interviewed every valedictorian since 2020 and hundreds of students.
You're all A+ types, not even just A types. You giving your best effort already puts you in the top 1%. You guys are awesome.
This excites me the most about the future of my industry...
AI is going to free up creative people to actually be creative again instead of pushing pixels.
A cause I'm most passionate about...
Helping to tell the stories of people and work that deserve way more attention than they get.
Favorite way to end the day...
Tea and some part of swim, bike, or run.
Top of my bucket list...
Diving the Great Barrier Reef before it's just the Okay Barrier Reef.
My favorite quote...
The best way to predict the future is to create it — but who said this is vague...Peter Drucker, Dennis Gabor?
How many pets/animals live at home? Can you tell us about them?
None currently — but I'm surrounded by some of the best veterinarians in the world, so I figure I'm covered when the time comes.
