Working closely with student-facing offices across the university, Virginia Tech is preparing to replace HokieSPA with a new cloud-based platform called My Virginia Tech (my.vt.edu). The new platform will provide a far more flexible and contemporary way to access the tools that students and employees rely on to conduct business, register for classes, conduct financial transactions, and keep their personal information up to date and accessible.

HokieSPA — short for “student personal access” — has served Virginia Tech for almost 30 years. Over that time, the platform was customized many times to fit the university's needs. Those modifications made updating the platform increasingly difficult and no longer align with the university’s changing business needs.

"HokieSPA has served us well, but the way students interact with technology and what they expect from it has changed dramatically,” said Rick Sparks, associate vice provost and university registrar. “Moving to My Virginia Tech means we can keep pace with those expectations and spend less time working around the limitations of an aging system and more time focused on supporting student success."

With my.vt.edu, faculty, staff, and students will experience:

  •  A clean, mobile-enabled, user-friendly look and feel
  • Intuitive self-service portals for registration, advising, and financial aid
  • A personalized student experience including advising support and integrated academic planning tools
  • Streamlined administrative workflows
  • Centralized curriculum and catalog management
  • Robust reporting and analytics to support enrollment management, budgeting, and accreditation

“The student information system brings together dozens of tools, data, and capabilities used in offices across the university,” said Sharon P. Pitt, vice president for information technology and chief information officer. “Making this change would not be possible without the deep collaboration we have had with all our project partners. We're very grateful for the cooperation and understanding as we move towards the launch of this new platform."

The conversion from HokieSPA to my.vt.edu is scheduled to begin prior to the Memorial Day weekend on Thursday, May 21, at 5 p.m. and continue until Tuesday, May 26, at 8 a.m. Information will continue to be shared as the implementation approaches.

An information session for faculty and staff will be held on Tuesday, March 3, at 2:30 p.m. in 310 Kelly Hall and via Zoom. This session will be hosted by members of the my.vt.edu project team with a question-and-answer session at the end. The session will be captioned and recorded.

Later in the spring, an information session for students will also be advertised as well as additional opportunities to learn more about the new platform.
