Beyond Boundaries Scholars: Turning passion into purpose

At Virginia Tech, education is defined by more than coursework. Experiential opportunities help students explore their interests, strengthen self-confidence, and shape the paths they will take long after graduation.

By reducing financial barriers, the Beyond Boundaries Scholars program ensures students like Sofia Craddock and Kai Sanborn can take full advantage of the opportunities available to them during their time at Virginia Tech.

Sofia Craddock, an upcoming senior majoring in marine conservation, came to Virginia Tech driven by a desire to protect oceans and preserve clean water.

Initially considering a different academic path, she discovered her passion for marine science through hands-on learning and research opportunities focused on marine animals, including whale sharks.

“For the first time in my life, I’m excited to go to class,” Sofia said. “Being able to learn something and put it into practice in the same class is exciting for me.”

The scholarship not only supports Sofia’s education, but expands her opportunities beyond the classroom, including the ability to study abroad. 

“I’m building my knowledge bank and it’s a lot more fun than I thought it would be,” she said. “I think Virginia Tech made me a different person, but for the better. It’s given me so many opportunities to do things.”

For Kai Sanborn, an upcomong junior studying physics, the Beyond Boundaries Scholars experience is rooted in mentorship, leadership, and gratitude. 

With aspirations shaped by a military family and a strong desire to make his parents proud, Kai found a sense of belonging through Virginia Tech’s Corps of Cadets and the support systems surrounding the program.

“I want to make them both proud,” Kai said. “Show them they got me here. That’s why I push myself so hard.”

Growing up moving frequently, Kai learned resilience early on. At Virginia Tech, Beyond Boundaries Scholars has provided stability and a place where mentorship, leadership development, and community intersect.

He is deeply appreciative of the sponsors who make these experiences possible, recognizing the scholarship as a catalyst for opportunity and a reminder that others believe in his potential.

Together, Sofia and Kai reflect the heart of the Beyond Boundaries Scholars program as students who come to the university with curiosity and determination, ready to thrive when given the support to explore, grow, and lead.
