The Southern Piedmont Agricultural Research and Extension Center in Blackstone will open at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 28, with reduced operations.

As the wintry weather continues, the following Virginia Tech locations will be closed on Tuesday, Jan. 27. 

  • Blacksburg campus:  Due to inclement weather, the Virginia Tech campus in Blacksburg will be closed on Tuesday with in-person classes, events, and activities canceled. All online classes and events will be held as scheduled.
    • University employees designated "emergency personnel" are expected to report to or remain at work as instructed by their supervisors. Non-emergency personnel should not come to campus. Employees with a remote or hybrid work schedule should continue to work from their remote locations as scheduled.
    • Residence halls and dining centers will remain open. Dining hall schedule information and any schedule changes can be found online
    • Schiffert Health Center will be open from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. on Tuesday for walk-in, urgent care needs only.
    • Rec Sports will open McComas Hall from 11 a.m.-4 p.m. Tuesday with the pool open from 11:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m. for on-campus residents. All other recreation facilities will remain closed on Tuesday.
    • All Student Engagement and Campus Life facilities will remain closed on Tuesday.
    • The Veterinary Teaching Hospital will be closed Tuesday for community practice and specialty appointments. Emergency services will remain open.
    • The men's basketball game vs. Georgia Tech will go on as scheduled at 8 p.m. Tuesday in Cassell Coliseum. Fans who are not on campus or cannot walk to Cassell are encouraged to watch the game from home.

  • Greater Washington, D.C., area: These locations are closed for Tuesday. All in-person classes and activities are canceled. Online classes will take place as scheduled.

Due to the projected combination of snow beginning Saturday, Jan. 24, followed by ice accumulation, cold temperatures, and increased wind gusts over the following days in the New River Valley, snow and ice removal operations on the Blacksburg campus will be modified to help support safe and efficient pedestrian and vehicular travel. Reflective of the timing of the winter storm, snow and ice removal on campus roadways and main sidewalks around residential and dining facilities will be prioritized through the weekend. The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm warning to take effect from Saturday, Jan. 24, to Monday, Jan. 26.

Given potential disruptions from anticipated wintry weather, faculty are encouraged to plan ahead and to be prepared to make appropriate instructional adjustments consistent with university operating status:

  • If the university (or a specific location) is closed, in-person classes will be cancelled, while online classes should continue as scheduled.
  • If the university remains open, faculty should use professional judgment in accommodating reasonable student circumstances related to weather or travel conditions.

Thursday, Jan. 22

8:40 a.m.

In anticipation of potential wintry weather, Virginia Tech has put snow emergency routes on the Blacksburg campus in effect starting at 5 p.m. Friday.

All state vehicles parked along the snow routes must also be moved during this time to ensure streets remain open for emergency use. 

The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm warning to take effect from Saturday, Jan. 24, to Monday, Jan. 26.

Snow routes go into effect prior to road conditions deteriorating to support snow removal and emergency vehicle movement.

University officials are monitoring the potential for wintry weather throughout the weekend. If conditions affect campus operations, updates will be posted to the university's status page and distributed through email, official Virginia Tech social media accounts, and - if immediate action is needed - VT Alerts.
