Engineering, computer science programs rank among world’s best
Virginia Tech's engineering and computer science program are ranked among the best 125 programs in the world in the recently released 2026 Times Higher Education World University Rankings by Subject.
The engineering program was ranked 85th in the world, while the computer science program was listed in the 101-125 range.
“This recognition from Times Higher Education affirms the global distinction and momentum of Virginia Tech’s engineering and computer science programs,” said David Knight, interim dean of the College of Engineering. “Being ranked among the world’s best reflects the achievements of our world-class faculty, the talent of our students, and our commitment to research and education that address societal challenges and create meaningful impact across industries and communities worldwide.”
These Times Higher Education (THE) Ranking by Subject 2026 evaluate universities across 11 subject areas using a refined version of the overall World University Rankings 2026 methodology to provide a comprehensive view of academic and research excellence, according to THE. The mythology considers teaching, research environment, research quality, industry partnerships, and international outlook.
The engineering ranking focus on five disciplines: general engineering, electrical and electronic, mechanical and aerospace engineering, civil engineering, and chemical engineering. The computer science rankings evaluate programs including software development and engineering, artificial intelligence and machine learning, and cybersecurity and networks, according to THE.
