Yukitaka Kani DVM, MS, PhD '22

Assistant Professor of Anatomy, Department of Biomedical Sciences and Pathobiology

When did you join the veterinary college?
August 2024

The best part of being a faculty is?
Being part of the education of next generation of veterinarians in a respectful environment between all the members of the VMCVM community.

Best advice I've gotten...
Keep calm in any situation.

How would you capture the essence of your work in a newspaper headline?
From Classroom to Clinic: How Veterinary Anatomy Provides the Crucial Knowledge for Animal Health

My hidden talent...
Drawing

A person who has inspired me...
My dad, he is a man of few words but one who demonstrates his authority through actions.

Words of encouragement to a current veterinary college student...
If you learn anatomy, you'll know what's normal. If you know what's normal, you'll know what's abnormal.

One misconception that all students seem to have is?
Anatomy is about only memorizing (is not!! Anatomy is pure logic)

If I had a superpower, it would be...
Teletransportation

This excites me the most about the future of my industry...
Recently, I went to an anatomy conference focused on human anatomy. They did a lot of things studying one species, so I realize in veterinary anatomy, we still have a lot of things we could do.

A cause I'm most passionate about...
I really like when the students said "that make senses," it makes me feel that my work is valued and fills me with energy to keep improving to make anatomy more friendly

Favorite way to end the day...
Eating ice cream with my wife.

Top of my bucket list...
Finish creating the veterinary imaging anatomy course.
To revisit the drawings and apply them in my classes.

My favorite quote...
"If you can't explain it simply, you don't understand it well enough." Albert Einstein

How many pets/animals live at home? Can you tell us about them?
Currently we don't have any pets at home (maybe in the future...)
