John Maher honored with emeritus status
John Maher, the Thomas M. Wells and Kathy Dargo Professor of Accounting and Information Systems in the Pamplin College of Business at Virginia Tech, has been conferred the title of Thomas M. Wells and Kathy Dargo Professor Emeritus by the Virginia Tech Board of Visitors.
The emeritus title may be conferred on retired faculty members who are specially recommended to the board by Virginia Tech President Tim Sands in recognition of exemplary service to the university. Nominated individuals who are approved by the board receive a copy of the resolution and a certificate of appreciation.
A member of the Virginia Tech community for more than 40 years, Maher made significant contributions as the head of the Department of Accounting and Information Systems for more than five years and prior to that as director of the Ph.D. program in accounting and information systems for 15 years.
Maher has published many refereed journal articles in academic and practice-related journals and refereed proceedings on the topic of accounting and information systems. In addition, he is a three-time recipient of the Pamplin College of Business Teaching Excellence Award and was recognized as Pamplin’s Outstanding Faculty in Doctoral Education in 2009.
In the classroom, Maher has taught various undergraduate, graduate classes and doctoral seminars on the topics of accounting, business information systems, and accounting research methods. Throughout his career, Maher served on numerous dissertation committees and delivered numerous presentations at academic meetings around the world.
Maher received his bachelor’s degree in accounting and master’s degree in finance from the University of Scranton and a doctoral degree in accounting and management information systems from The Pennsylvania State University.
